Electric oven or OTG not heating: causes and what to do
Short answer
Most electric ovens and OTGs that stop heating have a burnt-out heating element, a faulty thermostat, a blown thermal fuse or a worn selector switch. If only the top or only the bottom heats, one element has failed.
Check these first
Set the timer
Many OTGs only heat while the timer knob is turned. Check it isn't at zero.
Check the function knob
Make sure it is set to top and bottom heat, not just the fan or the light.
Look at the elements
With the oven cold and unplugged, look for a break, a blister or a burnt spot on the heating rods.
Call a technician if
- An element is broken or doesn't glow
- It trips the power or smells of burning
- Food burns on one side or stays raw

Uneven baking
If food burns on top but stays raw underneath, or the other way round, one element or the thermostat is usually at fault. A worn door seal or a convection fan that has stopped can cause it too.
Questions
Can an OTG heating element be replaced?
Yes. Elements are a common replacement part and can usually be fitted at your home.
