Microwave not heating: causes and what to do
Short answer
A microwave that runs, lights up and turns the plate but doesn't heat usually has a failed magnetron, high-voltage diode, capacitor or door switch. These parts work at very high voltage and stay dangerous after unplugging, so don't open the microwave yourself.
Check these first
Check the power level
Make sure it isn't on Defrost or a low power setting.
Test with water
Heat a cup of water for one minute on full power. It should be clearly hot.
Check the door
Close it firmly. A door that doesn't latch properly can stop heating.
Call a technician if
- Water is still cold after one minute on full power
- It hums loudly or buzzes
- It sparks, smells of burning or blows the fuse

Why you shouldn't open a microwave
The high-voltage capacitor inside a microwave can hold a dangerous charge even when it is unplugged. A technician discharges it safely before testing the magnetron, diode and switches.
